The two indexes—geographical and subject keywords—are important resources, but the development of these indexes for an international group, and in a language that is not used by all, must be considered a major challenge and experimental. Our field of dance research is relatively new and the language and jargon develops within each geographical research center. The compilation of subject keywords demonstrates that we often have different keywords for the same ideas or definitions.
The geographical locations are spelled and alphabetized by English-language standard: such as Austria, instead of Österreich; Croatia, instead of Hrvatska; Denmark, instead of Danmark, and so on.
The subject keywords are also in English. With each citation, they are listed in alphabetical order, except for numbered centuries (they are placed at the end) and generic dance terms, which are italicized and also placed at the end of the keyword descriptors after the numbered centuries. Although the use of some subject keywords were recommended to non-English speaking authors, there was an attempt to maintain the terms as suggested and used by the author in their own contexts.
